Gaia Hypothesis

According to Wikipedia, "the Gaia hypothesis is an ecological hypothesis that proposes that living and nonliving parts of the earth are a complex interacting system that can be thought of as a single organism. Named after the Greek earth goddess, this hypothesis postulates that all living things have a regulatory effect on the Earth's environment that promotes life overall."

At first glance the normal response to this hypothesis is, "yeah, right, and I suppose you believe in UFOs too."

There are aspects of the hypothesis that scream out at those who look a little deeper. For instance, the salinity of our oceans has remained fairly constant at 3.4% for hundreds and hundreds of years. Our atmosphere also has a fairly constant composition of 79% nitrogen, 20.7% oxygen, and 0.03% carbon dioxide. And the global surface temperature of the Earth has remained fairly constant, despite an increase in the energy provided by the Sun.
Could the Earth be a living organism, a sentient being?

UFO Pilgrim thinks not, but you be the judge.
